Whatever your opinions are of the man, it was Lil Wayne that said “life is a lot like skateboarding” and he was right, but it is so much more than that. Tony Hawk said “I feel like skateboarding is as much of a sport as a lifestyle, and an art form, so there’s so much that that transcends in terms of music, fashion, and entertainment.” To me, Skateboarding is Life, Life is about skateboarding. It’s intrinsic and real, it’s important. I spend so much time at the skatepark that I’m the easiest person in the world to find. And there are rules that govern the skatepark just like there are rules that govern life. I’m not sure people can really understand that unless you’re IN IT:
People might see me and think me rebellious, think me anti-establishment but the truth is the only thing I hold strong views on are my footwear. And that’s where my rules of the Skatepark come in:
Rule No. 1: If I see you down the skatepark in non-skate appropriate footwear i’m gonna let you know because not only are you putting your own life in danger, you are also endangering me. On top of that you’ve just shown me you aren’t ready for it.
Rule No 2: If you see me and like what i’m doing you need to show appreciation, don’t try and one-up me because that’s sacrilegious.
Rule No 3: If you are in the bowl, please don’t be doing tricks – that is not the space for it. You can just as easily find some flat ground to work from and up your skill levels.
Rule No 4: If you’ve lost control of your board I want to hear you yell ‘BOARD’ at the top of your voice – if I come into contact with it then it’s my fault, if you don’t shout, it is 100% your fault.
Rule No 5: Bring your kids to the skatepark and enjoy yourself, but someone, somewhere has to know what they are doing. If the skatepark looks serious then perhaps that isn’t the best place to let your child get on their skateboard for the first time. There is etiquette and it needs to be observed, for everyone’s safety.
Rule No 6: Keep an eye on the traffic – it is your responsibility to take care. We all have a combined duty to look out for one another, do not be oblivious to another skater’s journey.
Rule No 7: Nod me and I’m gonna nod you back: I also expect that in return, it is not an aggressive spot – we are all on our own journey of discovery, let it be.
Rule No 8: Understand what it means to “snake” someone and don’t do it.
Rule No 9: If you are on your BMX or on a Scooter just be courteous – you have as much right to be at the skatepark as everyone else but nobody likes the coloniser so show some respect to the natives.
Rule No 10: Poles are not for chilling or hanging or touching – it is an obstacle to accomplish – if it’s not on your run, leave it be.
Thanks, and remember “Skateboarding is not a crime”.
