The Avant Observer

There are multiple parts to all journeys and so much is missed when we focus only on the end point, the destination. After all this time i’m excited about the prospect of getting there, not just the thought of actually being there but the plan, the commute, the arrival, i’m excited about ‘being on my way’, about letting someone know that ‘i’ll be there soon’. I want to take a detour, i want to enjoy the outside, i want to take forever to get somewhere thats just half an hour away, i want to explore, i want to visit new spaces, green spaces, i want to take the route through the park, because I can, I’m not in a rush, i want to take my time. I may not be five years old anymore but there is still something special about the seat upstairs at the front of a double decker bus, its window like a high-definition movie, vibrant and interactive. My clothing pays homage to retro colours and graphics, two colour screen prints and colours that epitomise the TV of the 80’s. My gadgets are classic, like the walkman and my favourite mix tape. Sometimes, I just want to feel like an outsider, like i’ve been sent here to observe, from the past or perhaps from the future, whichever it is, it can’t be just me that realises the value in this journey?

The first thing you have to know is yourself. A man who knows himself can step outside himself and watch his own reactions like an observer.

– Adam Smith

A journey, after all, neither begins in the instant we set out, nor ends when we have reached our door step once again. It starts much earlier and is really never over.

– Ryszard Kapuściński
